The\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Balkan-Mountains\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Balkan Mountains<\/a>\u00a0lie east-west across Bulgaria, the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Rhodope-Mountains\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Rhodope Mountains<\/a>\u00a0extend along the Greek-Bulgarian border, and the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Dinaric-Alps\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Dinaric range<\/a>\u00a0extends down the Adriatic coast to Albania. By some definitions the region\u2019s northern boundary extends to the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Julian-Alps\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Julian Alps<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Carpathian-Mountains\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Carpathians<\/a>. Among these ranges extensive areas of good arable land are relatively scarce, though the valleys of the Danube,\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Sava-River\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Sava<\/a>, and\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Vardar-River\" data-show-preview=\"true\">Vardar<\/a>\u00a0rivers, eastern Bulgaria, parts of the Aegean Sea coast, and especially the Danubian Plain are exceptions. The mountains have a significant impact on the climate of the peninsula. The northern and central parts of the Balkans have a central European climate, characterized by cold winters, warm summers, and well-distributed rainfall.
